An ISBN is the barcoded unique identifier assigned to a specific book, allowing it to be tracked through 3rd party inventory systems at fulfillment center and retail outlets.
When you purchase ISBN assignment from OnPress, the ISBN is officially registered with Bowker — the ISBN issuing agency for North America — under our company name. This means our company name will be listed as the publisher of record for that ISBN in Bowker’s database. Because Bowker registers the ISBN to the company that purchases it, the publisher name can not be changed to your own imprint or business name.
You retain full ownership of your book and all associated rights, giving you complete freedom to use and publish it however you choose.
If you want your own name or imprint listed as the publisher, you would need to obtain your ISBNs and generate your own barcode directly from Bowker.
